Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Genius in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed ten goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or had there never been any cohesion holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, before he admitted that the management had not mentioned a registration embargo they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to determine if they are improving or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Presence

At least one man kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio during this campaign. He completed the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Finding His True Position

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to work out the exact type of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
