Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such treatments should be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to original weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a intense return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
